Year 1 Half term 1 - Week 1

12/09/2022 - Horror at the globe

In our first lesson we discussed our globe performance for Halloween. We did this by Kelly asking us what our biggest fears were and writing them on the classroom mirror. Some of the fears included Spiders, Snakes, Holes and porcelain dolls. Writing down the fears allowed us to brainstorm ideas on what we want to do at the globe, for example hang spiders from the roof.

After this we split off into groups (my group included: Me, A'layah, Bailey, Sophia, Laura, Gracie and Alan). We were then given a certain sinister scenario to recreate in our groups. our scenario was "the decaying walls were covered in crucifixes". We created a piece that portrayed an abandoned building with a murderer hiring people to kill there victims.

13/09/2022 - facial expressions and body language.

In this lesson we learnt how facial and body expressions can change a scene. Kane taught us this by showing us the argument scene between Mia and Sebastian in the movie 'La La Land'. When we first watched it Kane made it silent so we could guess what their facial expressions meant in the scene, he then played it with speech and it showed how the characters were actually feeling. This taught us that no matter what your saying it has to make sense with your facial expression or it won't work. For example saying "I hate you" while smiling and your body language is calm shows you are just joking where as saying "I hate you" while looking angry and tensing your body up shows you actually mean it.

In the second half of the lesson Kane asked us to show him the sinister scene we had created, he gave us some notes on how to make it more realistic as our group had gone for a more 'comedy-horror' take on it. Because of this feedback we decided to change our entire scene and start fresh, this was the best decision to make for our group as our new piece was much better and fit the script more accurately.

14/09/2022 - prosecutor, victim and saviour.

In this lesson we got into groups of three and played out a scene. For this scene we needed to pick our characters separately and then tell our partners. My character was Sasha who was 18, A'layahs character was DJ who was 34 and Baileys characters was Brian who was 15. Because of the ages and names we decided as a group that A'layah would play as the mother and we would be her kids.

After we had decided our characters Kelly asked us to pick who would be the saviour, the victim and the prosecutor. For our first go at this task A'layahs character was the prosecutor, my character was the saviour and Baileys character was the victim. I found it difficult to play the saviour as I didn't know how to change my characters perspective. However when we switched the roles and I played as the prosecutor I found it easier as I felt like my character could be a grumpy teenager who never does as they are told. Looking back on this lesson I know I need to work on being able to change my character.

15/09/2022 - Paired script reading, Veganism

In this lesson we were told to get into pairs and was given a script to read with our partner. My partner was A'layah and we were given a script based on veganism where the waitress was very passionate about there restaurant and the customer was not please that they didn't have any meat options. We both read out part A and B to decide who would best suit the roles. However we both couldn't decide as we didn't really enjoy the script overall and I felt like I couldn't give my all into it so we asked Kelly to listen to us read each part and which part she thinks would be best for us.

I was given part B, the customer. I was happy with that decision as I felt like I could act it a little better than part A as it had more depth to the character in my opinion and I could make her more or less sassy/rude. I decided to name my character Jenny and thought she would be best as a teenager as I feel like most teenagers would be rude and complain to a waitress.
